Auditions for King Lear

The Play: King Lear is one of the greatest works of literature in the English language.  The story is simple and direct: a king decides to give up the hard work of being King, and to divide his kingdom between his daughters, each daughter’s share is based on how they flatter him.

Two of them decide to play the old man’s game and inherit parts of the kingdom, the third does not and she is banished.  Lear then imposes on his two ‘good’ daughters, keeping all the trappings of being a King but without taking up the responsibility.  Whilst Lear is throwing his family and the kingdom into others see their chance to gain power.

King Lear is a story of fractured families and fractured countries.  SPAT’s performance will take these themes, and reflect them in a modern Australian context, with the outdoor setting providing a dramatic backdrop for the story.

Audition information for Not That Far From Sydney

This year SPAT is planning to do something new, and has commissioned two local playwrights to write works base on the theme “Not that far from Sydney.”  The plays are called The Old Viaduct Hotel and Cityfail.

The concept is to perform these pieces both at theatres in Kings Cross and Stanwell Park. These two one act plays will explore both the connections and differences between these places that exist only 75 minutes apart by train, but can feel like they exist in different worlds.

Each of these two plays will be approximately 45 minutes long, and will have separate casts and be directed by the playwrights.

We are looking for a range of ages, both men and women. These roles are unpaid.

For “The Old Viaduct Hotel” we are looking for six actors:
