Auditions for King Lear
The Play: King Lear is one of the greatest works of literature in the English language. The story is simple and direct: a king decides to give up the hard work of being King, and to divide his kingdom between his daughters, each daughter’s share is based on how they flatter him.
Two of them decide to play the old man’s game and inherit parts of the kingdom, the third does not and she is banished. Lear then imposes on his two ‘good’ daughters, keeping all the trappings of being a King but without taking up the responsibility. Whilst Lear is throwing his family and the kingdom into others see their chance to gain power.
King Lear is a story of fractured families and fractured countries. SPAT’s performance will take these themes, and reflect them in a modern Australian context, with the outdoor setting providing a dramatic backdrop for the story.
